Why Should I Try Spinal Decompression for Herniated Discs?

Written By Eastlake Chiropractic and Massage Center on July 2, 2018

Picture a jelly donut.

That’s how Medicine Net describes the discs that serve as padding between your vertebrae.

These ‘donuts’ if you will, are made up of a central, soft component that minimizes the impact of movement on your spinal column.

Not exactly the breakfast pastry you were thinking of, right?

If you’ve ever experienced a herniated disc, you know your back, neck, arms, legs, or shoulders can feel quite painful and sometimes numb.

But with spinal decompression, this nonsurgical, drug-free therapy can provide you with great relief.

We’ll explain.

What is a Herniated Disc?

Often referred to as a slipped disc, a herniated disc occurs when there’s an abnormal rupture of the center portion of the disc.

Commonly, a herniated disc occurs in the lower level of the back, the area that constantly absorbs the impact of the upper body.

In addition to pain and discomfort the patient may be experiencing, the area may also feel numb if one of your spinal nerves is being compressed by the slipped disk.

Want a safe way to treat that discomfort? Consider spinal decompression.

What to Expect During a Spinal Decompression Session

Spinal decompression is a nonsurgical therapy that stretches out the spine using a traction table. Typically, a harness would be placed around your hips and attached to the table around your feet.

During the procedure, a negative pressure is created within isolated the herniated disc.

That negative pressure then pulls back the protruded disc, allowing it to heal. A computer will control the variations of that pull, programmed for the specific levels needed to effectively treat your case.

Advantages of Spinal Decompression for Herniated Discs

In a study of 30 patients with lumbar disc herniation, non-surgical spinal decompression was directly associated with a reduction in pain and an increase in disc height.

Advantages of Spinal Decompression Include:

  • Safety
  • Effectiveness
  • FDA cleared
  • Non-surgical
  • Drug-free
  • Affordable

In most cases, spinal decompression is completely painless and you can expect to feel a stretch in the spine. Your chiropractor will work with your specific condition to determine your treatment plan, but typically, it’s recommended to complete around 20 sessions for the best results. Each session lasts about 30-45 minutes each.
