Man with whiplashHave you recently suffered a car accident?

One of the most common types of injuries that people experience after a car accident is whiplash. Whiplash is another name for neck strain, which describes damage to the muscles or tendons in the neck.

5 Symptoms of Whiplash

You may have whiplash if you experience the following symptoms:

1. Neck Pain or Stiffness

Your neck may feel very painful or tight like the muscles are in a knot. Moving your neck may feel stiff or difficult, and the muscles may even feel tough or hard to the touch.

2. Increased Pain When Moving the Neck

You may feel increased pain when moving the neck, such as while looking over your shoulder or turning your head from side to side.

3. Tenderness in the Neck, Shoulders, Upper back, or Arms

Muscles and tendons are all interconnected. When a body withstands a major impact, the weakest point of the tissues is liable to be damaged. Additionally, neck pain can be referred to other areas like the neck, shoulder, arm, or back.

4. Headaches Starting at the Base of the Skull

If the head was jerked forward or backward, whiplash can result in headaches as well. Most often, these headaches start at the base of the skull and radiate forward.

5. Other Abnormalities: Fatigue, Dizziness, Tingling

The main structures of the nervous system may have suffered some trauma. This can result in symptoms like fatigue or dizziness, or even numbness or tingling in the arms.

Ensure You Seek Proper Whiplash Treatment

With any muscular sprain, plenty of rest and time to heal is the best practice. In the meantime, massage and chiropractic care can help alleviate the unpleasant symptoms.
