Woman with a headache Did you know that there are over 300 different causes of headaches that have been identified by scientists?

Headaches can be caused by any number of things, including chocolate, exercise, dehydration, and sexual activity. In places like Seattle, where there is a high barometric pressure, people who are sensitive can suffer intense headaches just from the weather.

Types of Headaches

Luckily, for all the different causes, headaches can be classified into a few different types. The most common types of headaches include:

  • Cervicogenic: problems with the neck

  • Muscle Tension: neck and back muscular tension

  • Post Traumatic: pain following some type of impact

  • Drug-Induced: often related to overuse of pain medication

  • Migraines: intense headaches with visual disturbances

  • Cluster: less intense headaches

Chiropractic Care as a Natural Headache Treatment

While the causes are diverse, traditional headache treatment options tend to be limited. Depending on the patient and their history, doctors may recommend pain killers like ibuprofen (Advil) or acetaminophen (Tylenol) to treat the headache while they conduct tests to detect an underlying disease.

However, since headache pain is associated with so many different pathologies (disease processes in the body) it can be difficult to discover an exact underlying cause of a headache. This leaves patients to suffer unnecessarily with untreated headaches.

Chiropractic care can often help relieve people of their headaches. Cervicogenic, muscular tension, and post-traumatic headache types can often be successfully treated by chiropractors with manual manipulation techniques.

Even other types of headaches may be improved with chiropractic care. This is because chiropractic treatment addresses the spinal, muscular, and/or habitual component of the headache, without invasive testing to discover an underlying disease.
