How Spinal Decompression Treats Herniated Discs and Arthritis of the Spine

If you suffer from a herniated disc or arthritis of the spine, you may find it harder and harder to live your normal daily life. If you suspect you’ve developed a herniated disc or arthritis of the spine, talk to our chiropractors—Dr. Calvin Mulanax and Dr. Lincoln Kamell—to find out if you are a good candidate for spinal decompression in Seattle.

What is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression therapy is a safe, non-invasive treatment for arthritis of the spine, age-related disc degeneration, back and neck pain, herniated discs, and sciatica. It utilizes a comfortable, padded traction table that is controlled by precise computer calculations based on your specific measurements, symptoms, condition, and treatment area. One of our chiropractors will control the movement of the table while you lie on it, fully clothed.

How Does Spinal Decompression Treat Arthritis of the Spine and Disc Herniation?

The motorized traction table used in spinal decompression gently and slowly stretches out your spine, allowing it to shift back into alignment. This takes pressure off spinal nerves, reduces herniated or bulging discs, and improves pain. As the spine stretches, it allows fluid, oxygen, and nutrients to flow freely throughout the spine. This decreases inflammation and fluid buildup, so it alleviates spinal arthritis symptoms like pain, stiffness, and loss of range of motion.

How Many Treatments are Necessary?

This depends on the severity of your symptoms, as well as your age, overall health, how well you respond to treatment, and the recommendation of our chiropractors. In general, patients undergo 12 to 20 sessions over a period of four to six weeks.

Am I a Good Candidate for Spinal Decompression?

You may be a good candidate for spinal decompression if you have arthritis of the spine that hasn’t responded to other treatments or medication, and the symptoms are preventing you from living a happy, healthy life. You should not undergo spinal decompression if:

  • You are pregnant
  • You have spinal tumors or bone cancer
  • You have any type of spinal implant
  • You have artificial discs
  • You have broken vertebrae
  • You have had spinal fusion
  • You have undergone failed back surgery
  • You have had multiple surgeries without success
  • You are taking blood thinners
  • You have an abdominal aortic aneurysm or osteoporosis, spinal stenosis, or a spinal infection
